First let’s understand what a tattoo is. The ink particles in a tattoo are too large to be removed by your body, and therefore give a permanent result. The laser works to break down this pigment into smaller particles, which your lymphatic drainage system can collect and remove from the body.
The laser doesn’t generate heat, but as the pigment shatters, the particles can create friction, which generates heat. Therefore we pre-empt this production of heat by cooling down the skin before, during and after the treatment. This way the feeling of pain can be avoided.
Different colours respond to different wavelengths of light, and therefore settings can be changed to treat different coloured tattoos.
How often do you treat the tattoo?
The determining factor is how well your lymphatic drainage system works. The ability of this system to remove broken particles will determine how often you need treatment. For example the longer you give the lymphatic drainage system to work the better. Ideally 12 weeks between treatments would be best but you can have treatments as early as 6-8 weeks apart.
How many treatments do you need?
This depends on the size of the tattoo, the location and the density. The closer the tattoo is to a lymph node the less distance the pigment needs to travel, therefore its clearance will be more rapid. Tattoos on the lower parts of the body need to travel further to be removed. The density of the tattoo determines the amount of ink that needs to be broken down and then removed. Therefore once all of these factors have been determined we will have more understanding of treatment length. Generally it is between 4-12 treatments.
What to expect afterwards?
During the treatment you can see a “frosting” effect which looks like ice crystals on the skin. This is due to the moisture in the skin warming up and coming to the surface. The tattoo can appear to be raised or red. It can feel a little sore as well. These are normal side effects and generally wont last beyond a few hours.
What do I do after the treatment?
After the treatment we explain to our clients to care for the tattoo like you would a sunburn. This means keeping it out of the sun, avoiding hot showers and applying soothing gel if required.
How much is each treatment?
Before we can give a price we need to evaluate the tattoo and gather more information. Once we know more about it we are able to quote a price.
You will need multiple treatments, so packages are the most economic way of paying for the treatment since they are always at a reduced price. We sell packages containing 5 treatments, and any treatment after that will be at a heavily reduced price. Also, if it takes less than five treatments the money you have paid becomes credited to your account to be used towards another treatment or product of your choice.
What machine do we use?
We use a Revlite Q Switched laser that is only sold in Australia to Doctors.
